Recently in Florida, the state legislature passed a law requiring both motorists and their passengers to wear a seatbelt at all times. Unlike previous seatbelt laws, the Dori Slosberg and Katie Marchetti Safety Belt Law authorizes police to pull over and ticket motorists solely for not wearing their seatbelts. If a police officer sees or has other cause to believe anybody in your vehicle isn’t clicked in, that alone is sufficient to issue you a ticket – no other traffic infraction is necessary. This is called a “primary” seatbelt law and as of February 2011, thirty-one states and the District of Columbia have a similar law in force.
